Spring
Jolly - 21st May 2005
Our
annual Spring Jolly is a day-out themed around literature and literary
figures. Most importantly it is a great chance to see the beauty of East
Anglia and to enjoy the company of fellow EAW members.
Along the way, there are short
readings from the works of local writers by members of the committee.
This
year's Spring Jolly was themed
around beer and writers in north
Suffolk. We visited:
- Brooke,
where George Ewart Evans lived (1968 – 1988) and wrote most
of his work on East Anglian folk-life and oral history.
- Redisham,
where Adrian Bell lived and turned into the ‘Grunsham Magna’
of his novels. Bell is also well known
for his regular column ‘A Countryman’s Notebook’, printed in
the EDP until his death in 1980.
-
St
Cross South Elmham Church, where poet Elizabeth Smart is
buried.
- St Peter
South Elmham, to take a tour of the
St Peter’s Brewery.
St Peter’s Hall dates from around 1280, although much of the
building is 16th Century. There is also a moat
and a ‘chapel’ that served as ‘muniment’
room, where the previous owners kept their bible, as well as
farm records and title deeds.
And,
as always there were ample breaks for
tea and coffee as well as lunch at the St. Peter’s Brewery.
The brewery tour also included a tasting of the
ales they produce, including Organic Ales and a rather tasty Honey
Porter.
