Summer Party

8th July 2006

Once again we were blessed with great weather for our summer party - luckily the heat of the week had been tempered by rainfall the night before. Over 40 members and their guests turned up for great food and entertaining conversation, and they weren't disappointed.

There were also three punt trips down the river, a raffle and the obligatory book sale. Here are some photographs from the day:

The summer party in full swing. At a pot-luck event you can never quite tell what goodies people will turn up with. This year, there were lots of delicious strawberries, raspberries and loganberries, as well as an amazing homemade chocolate cake, amongst the many temptations.

Julie Bruton-Seal, Matthew Seal and Anthony Thwaite discuss the finer points of soft fruit.

Matthew Seal, Tom Corbett and Juliet Corbett take a look at the second-hand books for sale.

Rosemary Hayes (middle) talking to Carol Twinch.

Guests peruse the book and plant stall, whilst others chat and enjoy the sun.

Dessert is called at the food table.

Second helpings at the food table.

Paola Trimarco, Juliet Corbett and Tom Corbett discuss women playwrights, whilst Amy and Martin Figura tuck into their food. In the background, wearing the hat, poet Bertie Lomas.

Raffle Winners: Libby Downing (signed copies of Herbert Lomas and Anthony Thwaites' collected poems), Martin Figura (3rd Prize: Libby Downing's Free Range Eggs), and Shelia Hardy (1st Prize: The EAW Summer Party 2006 Raffle Book - signed by all those present).

Lastly, as the party winds down, John Worrall takes a nap in the afternoon sun (just kidding, he's really filling in the Raffle Prize book!)

Thanks to:

  • Ann and Anthony Thwaite for allowing us to host the summer party in their beautiful back garden.

  • Herbert Lomas, Anthony Thwaite and Libby Downing for donating raffle prices.

  • All the members and their guests who came along and made the day so special (and for their delicious food).
