Gareth Calway: Exile in His Own Country - Best of Tour
2rd June, The Puppet Theatre, Norwich, 01603 629921

Gareth Calway’s seventh collection is a harvest of his best work – and an extensive selection of new poems. Dareth  Calway is Head of English at  Smithdon High School in Norfolk and the official poet laureate for Bristol City football club. He established poetry anthologies and competitions for teenagers, toured much of his writing as national ‘shows’/CDs and was East Anglian organiser for the Schools Poetry Association. He is 50 on the publication of this book and the poems combine the experience of that age with the enduring lyrical enthusiasms of youth.

Jack Mapanje Reading in aid of Norwich-Dedza Partnership
3 June, 7 pm, UEA Lecture Theatre 2. Tickets on the door £5 (additional voluntary contributions welcome)

Distinguished Malawian poet and writer, Jack Mapanje, will read extracts from his poems and other writing. His first collection of poems, Of Chameleons and Gods published in the UK in 1981, won international acclaim and was awarded the Rotterdam International Poetry Prize. It was banned in Malawi in 1985 and in 1987 Jack was imprisoned without charge or trial. Many writers and human rights activists, including Harold Pinter and Wole Soyinka, campaigned for his release, which eventually came in 1991. Fearing for his life, he fled with his family to the UK. He has published and edited other books, including poems that were composed while he was imprisoned. Jack Mapanje is currently teaching Creative Writing and Literatures of Incarceration at Newcastle University. Click here to download the flyer.
