Biography
Andrew Waterman was born in London in 1940. After a miscellany of clerical and manual jobs (bank clerk, kitchen porter, bookshop assistant, etc.) while living, and reading, in grisly London bed-sitting-rooms, he read English at Leicester University in his mid-twenties, and thereafter taught literature at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland from 1968 to 1997.
He now lives in Norwich, making frequent
visits to Sicily. He has one son, Rory.
Waterman’s first collection of poetry, Living Room in 1974, was made a Poetry Book Society Choice by Philip Larkin and Dannie Abse, and his subsequent collections have included Poetry Book Society Recommendations.
His Collected Poems (2000) gathers
into one volume his work up to that date. His poetry has been published
in magazines around the English-speaking world, and translated into languages
beyond that. And been broadcast on radio and television. He has also written
a large amount of critical prose.
Andrew Waterman is a recipient of
