Biography

Joyce Dunbar has written over 70 books for children. Her best known titles are Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go To Sleep, This Is The Star, and the Mouse And Mole series.

After many years teaching literature to mature students, she became a full time writer in 1989. In 1985 she was runner up for the Guardian Fiction Award with Mundo And The Weather Child, a novel about the imaginary friend of a deaf child. In 2002 she did a book tour in the US to promote Tell Me Something Happy, which is widely recommended as a book to help children feel secure. The Mouse & Mole series was animated for television with Alan Bennett and Richard Briers playing the lead roles. These stories were also on tour from December 2005 to April 20006 as the final production of Tiebreak theatre company. Another picture book Shoe Baby (Walker 2005), illustrated by her daughter Polly, has been produced as a puppet show and is part of the 2006 Brighton Festival, May 2006.

In 2001 she was writer in residence on Norwich Market, producing a book called Voices And Visions (Mousehold Press).

She was founder member of EAW in 1990, shortly after coming to live in Norwich, and was secretary for five years. She has also served on the committee of CWIG and on the judging panel of the Mother Goose Award. At present she is on the steering group for a project run by SCOPE called In The Picture, about the representation of disabled children in picture books.

She still does some teaching, most notably on the holistic Greek holiday Island of Skyros. In September 2006 she will take up a Royal Literary Fund writing Fellowship at UEA. She regularly visits schools and in October 2006 was one of five writers in residence at Jarrolds, Norwich.

She has two grown up children, Ben, a fashion photographer and Polly, an author illustrator. She lives in the centre of Norwich.
