Biography

Born in 1970 in Marburg, Germany, to German-Irish parents, Kathleen grew up in the university town of Giessen (near Frankfurt/Main). Now based mainly in Ipswich, she maintains a CV untainted by anything approaching a proper job. Kathleen started her career writing for a local paper and listings magazine alongside studying for a degree in Modern Languages and Literature at Marburg and Cologne universities. Coming to London in 1994/5 to teach German at Middlesex University, she met (fellow EAW member) Julian Earwaker, who was completing a Writing & Publishing degree there. In 1998, they self-published an illustrated guide to the literary landscapes of Norfolk under Julian’s Chapter 6 imprint (www.chapter6.co.uk). The book was later taken on by Aurum Press, London (now available through the authors). Four years later, Aurum published their guide to the landscapes of British detective fiction, Scene of the Crime.

Today, Kathleen works as a freelancer for European English-language magazines “Spotlight” (Germany, www.spotlight-online.de) and “Speakup” (Italy, www.speakuponline.it), specialising in stories from Britain and Ireland. Since 1996, her work for German National Radio (www.dradio.de) has involved anything from 5-minute arts reports on London exhibitions to hour-long feature programmes on the Thames, the Celts and the Via Francigena pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome.

In 2004, Kathleen wrote a German guidebook on London (www.marcopolo.de), which she now updates every year. After completing an in-house biography of one of Germany’s foremost travel publishers, she is now planning an English-language guidebook on an African destination in 2006/7 for a major UK travel publisher and is copywriting for Lonely Planet’s launch in Germany.

Kathleen is open to interesting book/copywriting projects, as well as translation work (German-English, undertaken with Julian Earwaker). We’re also always interested in house/pet-sits in beautiful locations UK/worldwide and London (references available).

Predictably, Kathleen enjoys travelling and reading, but also hillwalking and film. Recent favourite reads: David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas and Antal Szerb’s Journey by Moonlight.
