Biography

Roy Asser was born in Alexandria, Egypt where he spent his early years, apart from visits to the Sudan at the ages of six months and two years whilst his father worked for the Sudan Political Service. He was educated at Victoria College, Alexandra before serving with the Armed Forces in Egypt, Palestine and Tripoli.

His business career as chairman of a manufacturing company came to an end following a near fatal car crash in 1976,when his car was hit head-on by a sleeping driver.

On his recovery he decided to turn a life-long love of photography from a hobby into a profession, and to combine that with two other interests, art and architecture. In due course he became President of the prestigious Association for Historical & Fine Art Photography.  Over the years his work has been published in books and magazines worldwide.

His writing career arose from the realisation that  ‘a picture isn’t always worth a thousand words.’  What he considers to be his major work is a book published in 2004 currently in limited edition form of photographs he created from the memorabilia belonging to 24 Battle of Britain pilots, together with the letters and documents between him and the subjects building and refining the stories behind the images.  Copy No 1 was presented to The Queen who directed it to be placed in The Queen’s Library.  Copy No 2 was presented to The Prince of Wales who unveiled the London Battle of Britain Monument in September 2005

Because of the historic importance of this work, in 2004 he presented the original documents to the Imperial War Museum where they are now preserved in the Asser Archive in the museum’s Historic Documents Department.  Plans are in hand to publish the book in conventional form next year.

Roy lives with his wife, Pat in Pettaugh, Suffolk and spends much of his time encouraging the local wildlife to visit his garden. He is also a member of The Society of Authors
