Setting Up a New Profile...

Members of East Anglian Writers are encouraged to have a profile on this website for themselves and any pen-name they write under.

Just follow these easy steps to prepare your profile - we deal with all the technical issues to make it ready for the internet. To avoid mistakes and to save time for the volunteer maintaining the website, please read these guidelines carefully. It is important that all profiles are consistent -  these steps will help you to achieve that.

Step 1: Starting

Create a template profile in a word or text document. Either copy (by hand, or using a mouse to cut-and-paste) the following:

The Name or Pen Name your books are published under

Biography

Blank

Links

Blank

or, click on this link for a ready made template that you can save to your desktop.

Please fill in a separate profile for each pen-name (if any) you are published under.

Whatever you do, please do not use CAPITALS - not only does it make it hard to read, it is also seen by most internet users as SHOUTING.

Step 2: Choosing Genres/Topics

Look at the genre list (click here) and decide which area to list your titles. Add these categories under your name, so your profile should look something like this:

Fred Jones

Crime

Romance

Non-fiction (Travel)

Biography

Blank

What if you write in a category not listed? Suggestions are welcome, but please remember we have tried to make the topic headings as broad as possible to increase the exposure of your profile to visitors of the site. For example we have "Historical Fiction" as a genre rather than have three headings of Historical Fiction (Roman), Historical Fiction (Civil War), and Historical Fiction (Medieval).

Its worth exploring the site and examining what other writers have chosen for their titles.

Step 3: Adding Titles

Start listing as many of your titles as possible (the more comprehensive the better!) under their topic area or genre.

Titles should be listed in the following format:

Title (publisher year (of first or last printed)

So for example,

Cathedral Milk (Hot Ink Press 1997)

Please avoid any other information in your list of titles and also avoid italic, bold and underline in any of your list of titles.

If you have more than one title per genre/topic, please list them in reverse chronological order (in other words the most recent published/to be published first, and the oldest title last).

As a rule of thumb, if a title has been reissued several times and therefore has several different publishers, always go for the one that is currently in print. If none are in print, then just list the first time it was published.

If you have published a series, these should be listed separately under their own genre, for example, Children's Fiction (Tales of Oscar the Ferret Series) or Crime (Don't Look Now Series).

So now your profile should look a bit like this:

Fred Jones

Crime

Murder As Reality (X2 Publishers 2006)

Crime (Lord Julian Mysteries Series)

Lord Julian and the Ode of Death (X2 Publishers 2005)

Lord Julian Steps Forth (X2 Publishes 2004)

Lord Julian at Scotland Yard (X2 Publishers 2003)

Lord Julian and the Red Menace (X2 Publishers 2000)

Romance

The Heart of Gold (Potato Press 2001)

The Crimson Swing (Heartfelt Publishers 1995)

Die for a Swan, Live for a Nightingale (Heartfelt Publishers 1982)

Non-fiction (Travel)

Adventures with Karenni (Suitcase Press 2000)

Cycling the Gobi (Suitcase Press 1994)

Travels with my Otter (These are Made Up 1985)

Step 4: Adding a Biography

Add your biography. This can be as long as you want. Here are some tips:

Try to avoid repeating the titles listed on your profile - instead add some information that might be of interest to readers and people in the publishing industry.

It might help to think of it as an extended blurb. Your biography can be as long as you want, but shorter is often better.

Have a look at other writer's profiles via this link (click here): why not try Terence Blacker or Geraldine Evans ?

Step 5: Adding Links

The links section of the profile is to enable people to access other web pages that are about you, for example,

  • your personal website

  • profiles on publisher's website

  • fan sites

  • publisher's micro-sites/marketing sites

You need to send the complete web address of the sites you want included. With a line of explanation if necessary.

Please include the full web address including http://. It is easiest to copy and paste the address from the address bar of your internet browser.

Step 7: Last minute Checklist

  • Read this page again and make sure you have followed the instructions

  • Are there any missing titles?

  • Are any titles incorrect?

  • Are your books grouped by the relevant genre?

  • Are they list in reverse date order (most recent first)?

  • Have you included a biography?

The profile should now look something like this:

Fred Jones

Crime

Murder As Reality (X2 Publishers 2006) 234567891234

Crime (Lord Julian Mysteries Series)

Lord Julian and the Ode of Death (X2 Publishers 2005) 234567891234

Lord Julian Steps Forth (X2 Publishes 2004) 234567891234

Lord Julian at Scotland Yard (X2 Publishers 2003) 234567891234

Lord Julian and the Red Menace (X2 Publishers 2000)

Romance

The Heart of Gold (Potato Press 2001) 234567891234

The Crimson Swing (Heartfelt Publishers 1995)

Die for a Swan, Live for a Nightingale (Heartfelt Publishers 1982)

Non-fiction (Travel)

Adventures with Karenni (Suitcase Press 2000) 234567891234

Cycling the Gobi (Suitcase Press 1994)

Travels with my Otter (These are Made Up 1985) 234567891234

Biography

Fred Jones is made-up writer and none of these books exist nor did he write them. If it was true, he would be living in his boat off the coast of Suffolk, spending much of his time stargazing and writing his novels. Think of him whenever it is stormy. He is currently working on the next Lord Julian Mystery... Lord Julian and the Geep.
